The Need
Sickle-Cell Disease has limited and sporadic public awareness in different regions of the country and as a consequence, care for SCD patients varies from sufficient to non-existent. Advances in SCD treatment also suffers from mainstream support. Despite research being done in various institutions, there exists no true "champion" for a SCD cure. Lack of information on "what SCD is and is not" promotes fear and misinformation creating a serious barrier and dangerous risk to SCD patients. Medical institutions generally lack specific or standardized curricula to prepare medical students on SCD or SCD Pain Management. In some cases, the stigma, fear and absence of proper treatment and management of SCD crises is just as frightening and deadly as the disease itself.
How can you provide support? The ASCVF has established a fund, that is a perpetual endowment fund monitored by the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona. The net distributable income of the fund shall be distributed to organizations of the type to which an individual taxpayer may make deductible charitable contributions. Initially the annual income from the fund will be awarded as grants that describe projects, which promote SCD education. Support for the ASCVF Endowment Fund can be made online using the "Support" button below. Additionally, direct support can be provided to ASCVF via check. The ASCVF board will use this support to assist with operating the ASCVF Foundation, to support special projects outside of the grants program and/or to increase the ASCVF Endowment Fund held at the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona.
